Chisato: Practicing What She Teaches

California
Chisato is married to her best friend and is raising two beautiful, silly, funny and adorable four-year-old boys together. She is also a licensed marriage and family therapist and a licensed professional clinical counselor in Southern California. At the moment, she works 2 jobs (1 full time and 1 part-time) and is getting her doctorate degree from USC at the moment. Her husband also works part-time and is a full-time graduate student. The two boys are the reason Chisato and her husband continue to grow and keep going!

Chisato shares with us her motherhood beautiful story, giving us a glimpse into the mindful practices she uses with her twin boys, both on the autism spectrum with mixed expressive language disorders who have a difficult time communicating verbally. She uses her knowledge and grounding skills honed as a licensed therapist and counselor to apply patience and calm to each day.

By spreading awareness and knowledge of her “ausome” boys and the beautiful perspective that their diagnosis is not who they are, it is just a part of them, she makes it her mission to love every single part of them. Chisato’s mindfulness practice enables her and her husband to really be in each moment as a family, able to love, nurture, and accept their boys for who they are…two beautiful thriving young boys.

Chisato shares us a thoughtful analogy that when her boys are having trouble regulating or experiencing overwhelm and she is able to calm and ground herself to become their anchor she can be the safe space for them but if she allows herself to be frustrated or distracted, she becomes a balloon, rising to the level of intensity they are feeling, not the calming anchor her boys need.

As a busy woman working 2 jobs, full time and part-time, as well as going to school to get her doctorate, Chisato knows she could very easily succumb to the stress and be pulled in all the directions her attention is required. Her mindfulness practice helps her to stay focused on what she is doing in the moment and find true joy in all that she does each day. Chisato tells us about her daily gratitude practice, an inspirational moment in each day to find something to be thankful for, even if it is just how we can learn from those experiences and gratitude for the opportunity to try again tomorrow.
