Hello Enlightenedhood Babes!
My name is Lauren Hyland, I am the founder of Hyland Consulting LLC and momma of 2 babes under 2 years old.
I always, and I mean always, knew that I was going to be my own boss one day. My dad has forever been a great businessman and I was constantly told that I was him with boobs (LOL). So in my mind, I was always going to go into business, it intrigued me from a young age and later in life, I found out I was pretty good at it.
I went to school for business with a concentration in Marketing and then on to earn my MBA. Straight out of college, I went into commercial insurance. It was a good gig for that time in my life but absolutely not what I KNEW I was made for.
When I got off of maternity leave after having my daughter Flynn, my first, I had opened a new office where I got to work from home and travel where and when I needed to go. I was only back up and running 4 months before I got the call, “we’re sorry but this just isn’t working out.” Now, my husband and I had just moved back to my hometown during my maternity leave, he’s an elementary school teacher and struggled to find a job so he was working hourly as a teacher’s aid with only single member benefits. So I was the main source of income as well as the insurance holder.
And in a 3-minute phone call (yes, 3 minutes and I worked there for 4 years and had just started a new territory 4 MONTHS prior), it was all gone as of midnight that night… You want something else to add to the outrageousness? I found out I was pregnant less than a week later. With no insurance. With only savings and an hourly income to sustain us. For a girl who’s been financially smart and is extremely well versed in business, I honestly thought this could
NEVER happen to me. Well, it did.
I was panicked for 2 days and let the emotions ride. On the third day, I put my big girl panties on and told myself:
1) I hated that job
2) I knew I was destined for greater things
3) I wasn’t going to leave of my own volition so I suppose God gave me the push I needed.
For 6 MONTHS I filled out job applications on Indeed. With over 100 resumes sent, I got 1 response. Talk about defeating, here I am with my MBA and close to 8 years of experience in Sales and Marketing and NO ONE wants me.
So I go to the interview for a job that I’m overqualified for, for that 1 person that showed interest in me. I sit down, answer a few questions, and am trying to build a nice repour with the woman sitting across from me. She pauses for probably 30 seconds while she’s looking at my resume and says, “Why would you want this job?” I try to be prepared for all situations so I say, “I’m ready to get back to work and have no problem working my way up the ladder.” She looks at me like she can see through my Bulls&*% and goes, “The Lord is telling me that you were not created to work a 9-5 behind a desk pushing papers. So if you want the job, I’ll give it to you. If you want to start your own business, I’ll be your mentor. Here’s $20 to buy this book, read it by Friday and let me know your answer.” Uhhhh I’m walking out of an interview with a word from God and $20 that I didn’t have when I walked in. Complete shell shock. I mean, Mind. Blown.
Well, 2 weeks later we met for lunch, drew up a game plan and less than a month later, I’m the proud owner of Hyland Consulting LLC. I’m still working a few kinks out and the game plan alters month by month but it’s one of the greatest adventures I’ve ever been on. And you wanna know the best part? It’s just the beginning. Don’t let your doubts and fears hold you back. Train your brain to be positive, motivated and encouraged. Encourage others in their endeavors. Help the next one in line.
You got this, babes. The only thing in your way is you.
With all my love and encouragement,
