There’s a lot happening in the world right now. Australia is on fire. A sport’s hero just lost his life with several others in a traumatic way. Politics are divisive. The earth is melting. On top of the stress of the collective, as parents, we need a lot of control to manage a household and keep everyone happy, healthy, and safe.
Yet, the key to personal and spiritual growth? Letting go. Surrendering. Putting your trust in the universe.
I know, believe me, it’s A LOT easier said than done. But as someone who walked away from a high-paying job to fulfill a mission I didn’t even fully see, I know a few things about giving up control and letting things happen as they are meant to.
Here are my top tips for loosening the grip and focusing on what you CAN control:
Cultivate a gratitude practice.
Putting your mind and heart space into what you DO have can instantly shift the need to push or worry about things you don’t. When we use gratitude and love as our driving force throughout our day, we instantly make space to attract high-vibe things. Thus, needing no control at all to receive the things you want.
Fall in love with the unknown.
Buddha teaches us that attachment to outcomes in our lives leads to suffering and pain. Chances are, things are NOT going to unfold how you imagined, even with all the control in the world. Learn to love the magic of the unknown (you can even sing Frozen if you want) and it might make the journey a little easier.
Identify your ‘control triggers’.
When you can identify things, events, or people that trigger your need for control, you can start to create healthier boundaries. Go deeper by asking yourself…why do I need to have full control of this situation? Where is this coming from? What would happen if I take a step back? Is that actually true?
Make a list in times of need.
For times you are going through control withdrawal, make a list of all the times things happened that were out of your control but completely fine in the end. Start reading the list when you feel the itch coming to help reassure yourself that things can have happy endings without you unnecessarily sticking your paws in it.
Start using mantras.
Mantras are a powerful way to reset your focus and let your words create your reality. Put your hand on your heart space and say this mantra out loud:
“I trust and surrender to the universe that everything is unfolding exactly as it’s meant to be, exactly when it’s meant to be.”
