Nicole Davidsohn: Saving Mary

In the winter of 2004, my life changed forever. As my mom was leaving her community service at a local kill shelter, she saw a woman bringing in a basket full of puppies. She stopped the woman, picked up the smallest puppy she could find, and brought it home. She handed me a tiny white fur ball and said, “Happy Hanukkah, Nicole.” I couldn’t believe it: I had a whole new life ahead and I wasn’t going to be alone.

As I have become more aware of Mary’s emotional needs, caring for her and myself has become increasingly more difficult. At first, she was “just a dog” and needed kibble, to go outside, and to play. Then, she became more of my friend as we snuggled and went through hard times together. Her beds became increasingly more comfortable. Her food became increasingly more human. And the time we spent together involved more communication. Caring for her slowly awakened me to my connection with others and myself.

In the spring of 2014, I met my current business and life partner, Dane. Mary fell in love with him on the first day. When he came around, he became Mary’s advocate for more time in the bed, more treats, and more doggy adventures. Mary began snorting to communicate, laugh, talk, chime-in, and agree to questions! At first, we thought she was just breathing funny, but time after time, we realized she was truly understanding us. This upgraded our level of friendship to a higher level of connection than ever before.

In the Fall of 2016, Mary turned 12 years old and was diagnosed with Lymphoma, a type of cancer. She was given three months to live, with or without chemotherapy. Using mindfulness and awareness, we knew that chemotherapy was not worth the price – financially or physically for Mary Jane.

We decided to skip the expensive, harmful, treatments and took a wholistic route. We gave Mary raw cannabis juice mixed with turmeric and ginger, the same formula I was taking daily for my Ulcerative Colitis. It gave her energy like a speeding bullet, and eventually put her cancer into remission. We changed her food from Blue Buffalo Salmon and Sweet Potatoes, to actually buying frozen salmon and steaming her sweet potatoes. If she wasn’t going to be with me much longer, I wanted to make sure she was enjoying the rest of her life to the fullest.

After getting the confirmation that she was in full remission, we decided we need to share the recipe and information about raw acidic cannabinoids and their ability to help canine cancer.

At the time of her diagnosis, we were running the only 100% comprehensively lab-tested medical cannabis dispensary in the nation. We were living in Santa Rosa, California and our delivery was called “Eva,” which stands for Evolution Via Awareness.

The idea comes from the fact that the more aware we are, the more we can evolve. The more aware I have become of Mary and her needs, her thoughts, and her journey, the more evolved I have become as a mother.

After much research, I found an organic process to preserve the healing cannabis juice. We turned the whole flowers into a dry powder and put the recipe into a capsule for easy, consistent dosing. USA patents on cannabis show studies of how only 10 milligrams of raw acidic cannabinoids can be a treatment for all of today’s modern diseases: cancer, autoimmune, colitis, Crohn’s, stroke recovery, and heart disease. I formulated the capsules to contain a minimum of 10 milligrams of raw acidic phytocannabinoids so that people could just take one a day and get the benefits we have seen.

We call it “Better Pet Relief+” and sell it in our e-commerce store, Eva. After creating the one formula and seeing her success, we felt the need to round out the line for other desired health outcomes. We make formulas for pain relief, focus, mood, sleep, and energy. The best part is they are all safe for humans and pets!

Every day I get calls from pet parents who have just received their diagnoses, looking for answers and hope. I’m here for them. I tell them our story. I send them free samples, and we work together as a team to help their pup, their child, or themselves.

It’s important to consider that being a dog mom IS being a mom. Through my journey of caring for Mary, I am now able to care more deeply for others. With Eva’s formula, I am able to help millions of people find the hope to heal. Mary Jane has shown me that we can do incredible things together, and this is what our children show us. They open our eyes to positive opportunities. They defy our negative self-doubt with their love. They break through our egos and shape us into better people.

It is now June of 2019 and Mary is almost 15 years old. She is no longer battling cancer and is only conquering old age now. She has had severe arthritis since 12 years old, and still runs, jumps, and plays like a pup. We give her Better Pet Relief+, Turkey Tail Mushroom Powder, Green Lipped Mussel, and a human-grade whole foods diet daily. She is my angel, my baby, and my best friend inspiring me daily to live my best life and help others do the same.

Nicole Davidsohn is a passionate individual who is here to share her story and opinions about what it means to be a dog mom. She believes that motherhood is a part of all of our lives, whether we have children, fur babies, or not, we all take care of the ones we love. She wants to share her message of self-love with the world, and why it is so important for mothers to hone in on this trait for themselves and their loved ones.
