Essential oils are a wonderful companion to our mindfulness journey. Our limbic system is so responsive to smells. We know that a certain smell can trigger a specific memory or evoke emotions. Does a dewy spring morning or campfire smell bring you back to a specific memory or feeling? Using that same principle, we can use an essential oil to help bring us back to our desired calm, present state of mind.
Essential oils can also assist in the emotional healing process and our day to day ups and downs. They can help center your heart and mind for meditation, they assist in turning your focus inward and clarifying the energy in your environment.
When selecting an oil for meditation, think about what type of meditation experience you are looking to have. Do you need centering, grounding or calming or something uplifting? Once you have that figured out, select your oil.
Oils for meditation:
- Centering: Align, Balance, Marjoram, Bergamot, Peace
- Grounding/Calming: Anchor, Frankincense, Serenity, Sandalwood
- Uplifting: Arise, Citrus Bliss, Grapefruit, Elevation
The centering oils help you trust in yourself and stay open to all possibilities. They also support self-acceptance, trust, fluidity, harmony and calm progress within yourself.
The grounding and calming oils support connection to yourself, community, emotional harmony, and innate wisdom. They also help with feeling complete, calm and courageous.
The uplifting essential oils inspire moments of rising up and reaching for your highest potential. They also support overall happiness, clarity, courage and improved performance.
Place a drop or two of essential oil into the palm of your hand and deeply inhale to assist your body into getting into your desired emotional state. You can also massage the oil onto your chest, over your heart, the back of your neck or bottoms of your feet. You can also use different essential oils for different types of meditations to remind your body the type of meditation you are looking to achieve.
